Meet The Pastor

Pastor - Gerald Kapanka

My wife Amy and I have been blessed with four children, James, Niki, Jaki, and Lexi. We enjoy spending time with them and supporting all their adventures. Amy is the glue that holds our family together. She keeps us all on schedule and informed of where everyone is and what everyone is doing. She works full time as a professor at Hawkeye Community College as the department chair in the Laboratory Department. We met in Sioux City where she grew up. All of our children were born there and we still go back on a regular basis to visit family. Amy has a Master’s Degree in Hospital Administration and a specialty degree in Clinical Chemistry.

I grew up in Bad Axe, Michigan and still love supporting my Michigan Wolverines. GO Blue! I attended St. Clair Community College before moving on to Concordia College in Ann Arbor. After completing my bachelors degree in Math/Science and Psychology, I moved to Ft. Wayne, Indiana for Seminary training obtaining a Master’s of Divinity, in 1989. In 2006 I finished a Doctor of Divinity Degree from Bethel Seminary in St. Paul, MN. My focus was on Church Leadership and Organizational Systems. My first call was to Calvary Lutheran Church in Sioux City where I met and married Amy. In January of 2000, I was installed as the pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church and School. My interests outside of church include reading, golfing, and refereeing soccer.

Serving the people of Immanuel and the Cedar Valley has been very humbling and rewarding. We have laughed and cried together; we have learned and grown together; and through it all we have loved one another. Who could ask for anything more.
